The Best Coastal Villages to Explore on Two Wheels Along Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is not only known for its beautiful coastal towns and Mediterranean views but also for its twisty roads and scenic routes that make it a fantastic destination for motorcycle travelers. Whether you're seeking thrilling rides along cliffside roads or peaceful countryside paths, this guide will help you explore the best coastal villages along Costa Brava. Also, our self-guided tour of Costa Brava strings a bunch of these villages together in a succinct tour featuring the best roads of Mediterrean coast.

One of the logistical advantages the towns along Costa Brava have is that they aren’t connected by regional train from Barcelona, meaning it naturally regulates the number, and type, of tourists that visit these towns. That being said, during the high season, these towns will get pretty busy.

Road Conditions in this area

Spain's road conditions are generally very good, partly because the temperature rarely dips below freezing, which helps to minimize frost damage and potholes, making for smoother, well-maintained roads year-round.

Ideal time to visit

In reality, year round. The temperature never dips below 15 degrees during the day, 5-10 in the evening. However, many of the shops and restaurants close for the winter months, so the towns are less lively during December to February. And my personal preference is to avoid Costa Brava during the high season of July and August

What riding gear is recommended

  • Jacket: a summer jacket between June and August is advisable, it can get pretty hot for thick leathers with the humidity of the Mediterranean. A thicker jacket and layers is recommended for riding between December and March

  • Gloves: I have burned the top of my hands on rides less than an hour during the summer months

  • Sunglasses or tinted visor: I prefer sunglasses to tinted visors, it offers greater flexibility to ride comfortably at any time of day, whether in bright daylight or low-light conditions. The sun sits closer to the horizon during the colder months, making sunglasses a necessity.

1. Cadaqués: An Artist’s Seaside Escape

Cadaqués is gem of the group, the prime example of a coastal village among the best along Costa Brava, it is also the furthest away from Barcelona (about 2.5 hours). If you’re traveling from France, or planning a Pyrenees trip, then Cadaqués is an easy addition to your itinerary. The roads leading into Cadaqués wind through Cap de Creus Natural Park, providing incredible sea views and a thrilling ride with elevation changes and tight curves. If you're looking for a scenic challenge, the road from Roses to Cadaqués is an essential route for your trip.

Why it's worth going: Cadaqués is the most visually stunning of the group, it is easy to confuse this town with one of the Greek Islands. Whitewashed homes accented with blue window shutters and purple and red flowers. I take the trip from Barcelona simply to walk the narrow streets and peruse the store fronts.

Top Activities:

  • Salvador Dalí House-Museum: A must-see for art lovers.

  • Cap de Creus Natural Park: Ride through this rugged landscape and enjoy panoramic views.

  • Explore the narrow streets of Cadaqués: Perfect for a peaceful afternoon.

Best Roads:

The C-65 and C-31 roads from Palamós to Begur wind through vineyards and pine-covered hills, providing scenic views and a quieter, more relaxed experience.

3. Calella de Palafrugell: A Seaside Gem with a Fishing Tradition

This small, traditional fishing village offers spectacular coastal views, it’s a smaller version of Cadaqués and closer to Barcelona - you can get there in 1.5 hours if taking the highway. The roads leading into Calella de Palafrugell provide a relaxed ride through the countryside, making it an excellent stop for riders looking to slow down and enjoy the scenic beauty. The coastal path between Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region, ideal for a short, scenic stop during your ride.

Why it's worth going: Calella de Palafrugell’s quiet atmosphere and stunning coastal views are perfect for those looking to unwind by the sea.

Top Activities:

  • Walk the coastal path to Llafranc: A stunning seaside walk.

  • Relax on the beaches: The narrow streets of whitewashed homes and restaurants pour out onto the local beach, with capsized wooden row boats wearing the weather of the sea. Grab a €3 bottle of wine and plastic cups from the grocery store and set up on Canadell Beach

  • Visit the Botanical Gardens of Cap Roig: Offering both natural beauty and sea views.

Recommended Restaurants

  • La Blava: recommended for the vibes, La Blava is positioned right on Canadell Beach in a converted fisherman’s house. It serves traditional dishes from the region and naturally, many seafood options. I wouldn’t suggest if you’re with a larger group, great if it’s you and a partner.

  • ARRR! Street food Calella: a block or two away from the beachside, this restaurant is away from the bustle, directly accessible with your motorcycle with parking right across from their terrace. This is a better option if you’re riding in a group and a great lunch choice.

Best Roads:

  • While the roads leading into Calella de Palafrugell aren't as twisty as others on this list, they provide a relaxed and scenic ride through the countryside.

4. Tossa de Mar: A Perfect Blend of History and Coastal Adventure

The ride to Tossa de Mar is one of the highlights of any motorcycle trip along the Costa Brava. The GI-682 road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guíxols is a must-ride route, and my personal favorite. This 23 km stretch is packed with twists and turns, making it a thrilling ride for experienced motorcyclists. Once you arrive in Tossa de Mar, you’ll find a historic medieval town and beautiful beaches.

Why it's worth going: The combination of historical landmarks, scenic routes, and pristine beaches makes Tossa de Mar a perfect destination for riders.

5. Sant Pol de Mar: Quaint Coastal Beauty

If you’re looking for a more local, off-the-beaten-path destination, Sant Pol de Mar offers a peaceful, authentic Catalan experience. However, due to this, ita popularity has increased and receives many more treavelers than before. The winding roads leading into this coastal town offer a mix of countryside and sea views. This area is also close to Montnegre i el Corredor Natural Park, which features scenic routes perfect for leisurely rides.

Why it's worth going: Sant Pol de Mar is quiet and beautiful, with nearby natural park routes and peaceful beaches. Also, much closer to Barcelona than the other options, technically, not part of Costa Brava.

Best Roads:

The roads in and around Montnegre i el Corredor Natural Park offer a scenic, laid-back ride through the forested hills.

Top Activities:

  • Relax on Playa de Sant Pol: A calm, pristine beach.
