Coastal Road

SECTOR 1

After spending 25 minutes on the motorway getting out of the city’s orbit, we get to the first section of the route, the Coastal Road. Upon the slow right-hand turn after the initial incline, your eyes are met with the most Mediterranean of scenes. Deep blue water stretching to your peripheries, a jagged rock face meeting the water’s edge and a white-faced cafe bar nestled neatly within.

The standout of this section of the route is the scenic quality, but that’s not to say we compromise on the quality of the ride. There are enough tight turns at varying elevations to challenge your skills that you’ll have to decide where to place your focus, finding the apex at speed or take in the views at a relaxed pace. However, if riding outside the early morning hours, cautious motorists will make that decision for you on this one-lane coastal road.

castle fox

Sector 2

There are three sections that make up this sector: the forest, the reservoir and the castle. Riding through this sector will transport you to a different century, an era where feudal peasants worked the fields overlooked by a castle housing their local lord. The outer ring is marked by the forest, a natural buffer to protect from invading armies or straggling gangs. We have the benefit of paved tarmac to navigate through the forest via tight turns at varying elevations.

Once past the forest, the sightlines open to the fields and the reservoir with the hilltop castle in the background. This section gives the impression of you riding into town, saddled with the power of 50+ horses, with the road marking the edge of lands and the reservoir.

The sector finishes off at the town which I recommend you pop in for a moment. Only a slight detour if you navigate the town's two roads on your motorcycle. Make your way to the town center where the castle lies and views of the fields and river you just previously rode in from, a good place to stretch your legs. For those interested in a coffee and a smoke, Forn de Castellet has outside seating with consistent sun coverage.

the vineyards

Sector 3

Castle Fox marks the edge of the Penedes region. We now enter the territory of the wine fields. There is a general tan hue that envelopes the rolling hills, slow slopes requiring only slight adjustments in trajectory. This sector is identified by flatter plains lands where the horizon is much further out. You can spot the church steeples of neighboring towns and wineries speckled across the landscape, and some farmhouses left in ruin from a previous era adding to the ancient feel of the region.

The longer stretch of this sector, the B-212, is a bit more dynamic than other sections. It carves up the wine fields offering a more spirited ride than other more streamlined sections which give time to taking in the surroundings. The BV-2128 loop has such a road that splits a wine field in two. No reason to push hard in this section. Enjoy the wide vistas and screensaver material.

This 45 minute sector concludes at the mouth of a new action of forest run which will surely test your focus as much as it will your riding skills.

the forest

Sector 4

We’re heading back into the forest for an extended period of time. This sector is the most challenging of the five. Not only because it has the tightest turns or the most narrow roadways, but those tight and narrows through thick vegetation produce decreased sightlines. You won’t be able to find the apex or react to an oncoming motorist also on a spirited ride.

As you carve this section, you also gain quite a bit of altitude, enough that you can spot the mediterranean sea even at 15 km out. As you reach the plateau of the hill, the forest opens to what looks like a cotton field on top of a hill. Tiny balls of white fuzz foregrounding the first layer of clouds that hover around the hilltop. Quite surreal when the geological conditions are in our favor, almost an angelic setting.

At the junction where TP-2442 and TV-2443 meet, there is a small town worthy for a quick stretch of the legs or a drink at the only restaurant in town. In fact, to call it a town would possibly be an overstatement. It would be missed if you have no business being there. Very doubtful it’s made any travel blog of the best towns near Barcelona.
