Medieval towns

3-day tour

The Catalonia region of Spain, bordered by the Pyrenees mountain range and Mediterranean coast, made it an ideal venue for the Muslim Moors and the Christians territorial disputes to play out. The constant battle for territory necessitated the building of fortified villages and castles to protect against invading armies.

The Pyrenees no longer serves the purpose as a protective barrier, but does provide a benefit to us motorcycle riders as a dynamic landscape offering impressive views of these villages, a tangible reminders of Spain's feudal history.

Our 3-day guided motorcycle tour will touch on the most important and well-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia, like Besalú, Pals, and Peratallada. We'll be riding through the same valleys traversed by invading armies and through the fields once worked by peasants, into the Feudal towns, but on motorcycles rather than horseback. And instead of trading wheat in the town's square, we'll enjoy a lunch representing the local fare of the Catalonian region.

What I appreciated with Moto España tours was that it wasn’t just about how many miles you could accomplish each day, we took the time to get a feel for the region
— Daniel Cheung
Our tour group was only 5 people, allowing us to experience the smaller, more authentic restaurants in the region.

Basecamp: Vic

Vic, a charming medieval town in Catalonia, Spain, is steeped in history dating back to the Roman era but flourished during the Middle Ages. Its well-preserved old quarter, including the grand Plaça Major and Vic Cathedral, reflects the town's importance as a religious and trading center during this period. Throughout the Middle Ages, Vic was a key seat of power for bishops, and its architectural heritage still showcases Romanesque and Gothic styles. Wandering through Vic's narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, where history and culture seamlessly blend with modern life.

dinning options

We’ve come up with a carefully curated selection of restaurants that embody the rich historical and cultural essence of the region. Each dining experience showcases traditional Catalan dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, reflecting centuries-old culinary traditions. From medieval towns to coastal villages, you'll enjoy meals that not only satisfy your palate but also tell the story of Catalonia’s vibrant heritage.

NOX Arrosseria. Nestled in the heart of Besalú, this family-owned restaurant offers a true taste of the Valencian rice dish we know as ‘paella’. The term is in fact the name of the pan the dish is made in, any restaurant claiming to have authentic ‘paella’ should have ‘arrosseria’ (arros = rice) is in the name.

Restaurant Ca la Teresa. Moving from the Valencia region over to the Catalan kitchen, our lunch in Pals offers traditional Catalan dishes from Canelon to Crema Catalana. This unassuming restaurant feeds the town locals, representing the palete of the region.

Hostal Mura. It doesn't get cosier than this 250 year old inn, with low-slung ceilings of medieval stone and oak beams, heated in the winter by a wood-fire stove. This inn serves local recipes for the town's 200 inhabitants, sourcing their ingredients from the farms and vineyards that surround this town.

This tour includes lunch for each riding day. For breakfast and dinner, you’ll have the freedom to explore Vic’s multiple dinning options.
